In order to maintain energy efficiency in your home, it is important to regularly maintain your appliances, including your water heater. A well-maintained water heater not only saves you money on energy bills, but also extends the life of the unit. At Air Done Right, we understand the importance of proper water heater maintenance and offer expert services to ensure your water heater is running efficiently.

Why Water Heater Maintenance is Important

Proper water heater maintenance can help save you money in the long run. A poorly maintained water heater can become inefficient, causing it to use more energy than necessary to heat your water. This not only wastes energy, but also increases your energy bills. Additionally, a poorly maintained water heater is more likely to break down, which can result in costly repairs or even the need for a replacement unit.

Steps for Maintaining Your Water Heater

At Air Done Right, we recommend the following steps for maintaining your water heater:

  1. Check the Pressure Relief Valve: The pressure relief valve is an important safety feature of your water heater. It is designed to release excess pressure in the tank to prevent it from exploding. To ensure it is functioning properly, you should test it annually by lifting the valve’s lever until water flows out. If the valve does not release water or you hear a hissing sound, it may need to be replaced.
  2. Flush the Tank: Over time, sediment and minerals can build up in your water heater tank, reducing its efficiency. To remove this buildup, you should flush the tank annually. To do so, turn off the power supply and water supply to the unit. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and run the hose to a drain or outside. Open the drain valve and let the water flow until it runs clear.
  3. Inspect the Anode Rod:The anode rod is a sacrificial rod that attracts minerals and sediment to prevent them from building up on the tank walls. Over time, the rod can become corroded and ineffective. Inspect the anode rod annually and replace it if it is less than ½ inch thick or more than 6 inches of the core steel wire is exposed.
  4. Check the Temperature: It is important to set the temperature on your water heater to a safe and efficient level. We recommend setting it between 120 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Higher temperatures not only waste energy, but can also be dangerous, as they can scald skin.
